Journal #7 -Chapters 26-28 Perspective:Scout

I was just walking home and I pass the Radley's house. I'm old enough now, I'm not afraid anymore. Then I start thinking if Boo was just a regular person, and I have a friendly conversation. I would say "hi" like I have said it to him everyday when I pass and he would say "hello" everyday like it was a routine. O well. I know how unlikely that is to actually happen.

Then at school Mrs.Gates talks about Hitler's persecution and says how wrong it is for Hitler to kill those Jews. Then she is at the courthouse saying that its about time someone taught the blacks a lesson. She is a huge hypocrite. How can she do that when, in class, she says how we are a "Democracy" and how Germany is a "dictatorship" So I guess her assessment is its wrong for Hitler to persecute Jews, but its right for whites to hate blacks. I don't think she can even be a teacher.

I hear Bob Ewell got a with the WPA. Then he lost it a few days later. Then he "allegedly" blames my dad because he lost his own job. Now he is breaking into Judge Taylor's house and stalking Helen Robinson. Whats up that guy? Last time I he won the case. Why is he so angry and screwing up his life?

Halloween is coming up and there is a pageant that I have to be in. I guess it was okay to be in the pageant, but now I have to dress as ham? The least that Atticus can do is show up, but he is too "tired" to go and so Aunt Alexandra. So, Jem walks me to school. It was dark, cold, and creepy. Perfect spot for a serial killer to do his killing. I was starting to think that there is a serial killer. Then there is something rustling in the bushes. Then Cecil Jacobs jumped out. Wow. I should punch him in the face for scaring me like that, but I had to get to the pageant. Now we are at the pageant and it soo boring. I fell asleep and missed my time to go up on stage. So I go out anyway and everyone starts laughing. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to wait backstage in my ham costume and wait till everyone left. After a while, I consented with Jem to go because he said its going to be really dark soon. Now I have to walk through the woods at night where I can barely see through the ham costume. It was a very inconvenient moment for me. Its cold, dark, and I'm wearing a ham costume that I can barely see out of. As we were walking we hear the noise again and we thought it was Cecil Jacobs again. We heard it every time we walked, but when we stopped walking we couldn't hear it anymore. Then one time we stopped walking and we still heard it. Then Jem yelled at me to run and I knew something bad was going to happen. I start running as fast as I can, but I fell over because of my ham costume. The shadowy figure picks me up and starts to choke me. Jem saves me and pulls him away. Jem starts carrying me to the streetlight but then he gets pulled away and I hear this bone breaking crunch. Jem screams and the shadowy figure has been pulled away by another man that I have never seen before. The noise settles down and I look for Jem. I look towards the streetlight and I see a man carrying Jem home.

When we get home, Atticus calls Mr. Heck Tate telling him that someone just attacked us. Then Aunt Alexandra helped me out of my costume and told me that Jem is just unconscious. Then a doctor called Dr. Reynolds comes and inspects Jem to see what really happened. Then he told me that he just has a broken arm. Then I see the man who saved us leaning against the wall in our living room. Then Mr. Heck Tate comes and tells Atticus that Bob Ewell is dead under a tree with a kitchen knife up his side. What a night. I guess anything can happen when your dressed as ham.
