Quote #2:
"I ran through the village, still coughing. There was smoke everywhere. So many screams, screams from people fallen and bleeding. I jumped over two more bodies, old men in the middle of the path. The second man grabbed my ankle. He was alive. He grabbed me and told me that I should lie with him and play dead. But he was bloody everywhere. One of his eyes was burned closed and blood flowed from his mouth" Moses pg 272, paragraph 2
In this quote Moses (Valentino's friend from Africa) is lying under a tree with Valentino in Africa. Moses is telling Valentino a story of how he got the wound on his back looking like crimson red stripes. Moses says that he was running away from the murahaleen when the village was on fire. He is heading towards the school that was burning because he thought people would be in there and would tell him what to do. He is running through the village and a person on the ground grabs him by the ankle and tells him to lie down with him and play dead. I think they did that so that if the murahaleen see them they would think they're dead and leave them alone.
This quote relates to the third question, What was the life of the characters in their home country, and relates to the first question, Why have the characters in your book come to America. This quote relates to the third question because their life in Africa is very dangerous. There are dangerous and deadly things everywhere. There are fires, murahaleen, and lions that are their to end your life. This relates to the first question because they want to feel safe. They don't want to be in danger anymore with their homes getting set on fire and having to play dead so they don't die. They want to get away from all the dangerous things.
I can't really relate to this but the closest thing I have experienced to this was then I was watching the movie Chuckie. Chuckie was an evil doll who just kills people in case you don't know. I was watching and I remember Chuckie get a cop inside the van. Then he pulled a string and alot of knives flew at the cop. Then a guy walked to into the van and he didn't know the doll was alive so he opened the chest that was inside the van and it was the cop. He was so scared that he walked back and he was on the freeway then he got hit by a bus and the blood got everywhere.
Have you ever experience or seen anything that can be described by this quote?
Quote #2
"In the morning I dreamt that my head was being pressed into the sun. In my dream, the sun was smaller, the size of a large pan, and my head was being pressed against it. The heat was so strong, it seemed to be melting my hair and skull. I awoke to the smell of something burning. It smelled like flesh on fire. Then I realized that the dream was not a dream: the Arab was putting a burning metal rod to my head. He was branding me. In my ear he branded the number 8, turned on its side" Moses pg 273, paragraph 4
This is Moses still telling how he got the scars on his back. He says that he was tightly tied to a horse for days and it left marks on his back. Moses said he passed out and he was dreaming a large pan sized sun was pressed against him and it wasn't a dream. He has become a slave and that he is branded.
This quote relates to the first quote because Moses is a slave in Africa. If Moses left Africa and came to America he would be a free man again. He can start fresh with no more lions and murahaleens. This also relates to the third question because his life was really difficult. It was hard to survive because they had to walk in deserts and tall grass for weeks and maybe even months to reach a destination, and along the way there are lions that are really hungry and there is a line of boys walking. Its like a buffet to the lion. There are no more murahaleen hunting, killing, and branding them either.
I can relate to this because I have experienced this many times. I just woke up somewhere at 5:00-5:30 and I had to get up and take a shower to get to school. I just woke up and the first thing I hear is my mom telling me to get up or she would be late for work. I did what any could would do and said "5 more minutes" I thought all that was a dream and then I woke up and was more aware than the first time. My mom got angry at me for not getting up and just going back to sleep. But not really angry.
Have you ever thought you were dreaming something and it turned out that it wasn't a dream?

Quote 1
I thought that this was a really good quote because I think it describes the almost dead guy lying in the path. I think it also does a good job in telling me that even though Moses should stop running, he doesn't want to lie down near the man because of the way he looks.
Question 1
I don't think so.
Quote 2
I think this is a good quote because it showed how Moses thought it was a dream at first, and didn't fell the pain from being burned, until he figured out he was awake and the sun he had been pressed against was really a branding iron.
Question 2
I don't rememeber anything like that.
